I-A-Q #15: You’re Still Listening to Content at 1x Speed?

Happy Monday!

Here is an Idea, an Action, and a Question to consider this week.

Idea

Speed up your education and exploration—literally.

If you use Chrome as your browser, download the extension Video Speed Controller or something similar that allows you to increase or decrease the speed of any video on your browser. Then incrementally increase the rate at which you watch all of your videos. Once you get used to 1.25x, for instance, try working your way up to 1.5x. I typically watch videos now at 2.5 – 3.0x, meaning I can get through content in much less time than if I were watching at the normal speed.

The same goes for audiobooks or podcasts. I’ll commonly listen to audio content somewhere between 1.7 –  2.5x. Most audio players will allow you to adjust the speed as needed. If yours doesn’t, find a new one!

You might worry that by increasing the speed at which you take in information, you’ll decrease your understanding. However, the higher speed forces you to focus more––you’ll understand better than if you gave your mind more chances to wander!

Action

Watch Jim Kwik’s video on reading faster twice. The first time you watch it, watch it at 1x speed. The second time you watch it, watch it at 1.7x speed. How’d it go? Can you see yourself watching content at an increased speed from here on out?

Question

Do you stop yourself from reading/consuming material because you “don’t have time?”

See you next week,
