💪 When to Tackle Weaknesses and When to Delegate Them

Happy Monday!

Here is an Idea, an Action, and a Question to consider this week.

Idea

Knowing yourself well helps you get real about what you're good at and what you're not. When it comes to growing personally and professionally, people usually fall into two camps:

  1. Focus on your weaknesses until they become strengths

  2. Focus on your strengths and delegate your weaknesses

This often feels like you have to pick one approach and stick with it. But what if you didn't have to choose just one? What if the better way is to switch between these strategies depending on the situation?

For example, when I first got started in real estate, I had an overwhelming number of weaknesses. I was brand new, and so I didn’t have foundational knowledge. At that juncture, it was important for me to focus on my weaknesses until they became strengths.

As time went on, though, and my foundational knowledge grew, I switched gears. This was mostly out of necessity at first—I was losing deals and burning out because I was doing it all myself. But then it became clear that I didn’t need to tackle foundation-level weaknesses anymore, but rather delegate my weaknesses to colleagues that could help me grow. This shift helped me use my time better and make a bigger impact.

So really, it's not about choosing one method over the other. It's about knowing when to shift gears between focusing on weaknesses and leveraging strengths as you move forward in your career. This flexible approach keeps you sharp and ready for whatever comes your way.

Action

  1. Assess Your Current Skill Set: Regularly evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. Be honest about where you excel and where you need improvement.

  1. Phase 1 - Build Your Foundation: Focus on turning your key weaknesses into strengths, especially in areas critical to your foundational knowledge and success in your field.

  2. Phase 2 - Optimize Your Performance: As you gain competence, begin to shift your focus. Leverage your strengths for maximum impact and delegate tasks that align with your weaknesses to others who excel in those areas.

  3. Review and Adjust: Continuously assess your development and the demands of your role. Adapt your focus between strengthening weaknesses and leveraging strengths based on your current needs and career goals.

Question

What are the current challenges in your professional or personal life that might be addressed more effectively by focusing on improving your weaknesses, and in which areas could you achieve greater success by leveraging your strengths and delegating tasks you're less skilled at?
